What is Broadwater County Trails Team?

Purpose: The Broadwater County Trails Committee exists to create a unified, community driven vision for developing multi modal trail systems across Broadwater County that enhance public health, safety, connectivity, and economic vitality.

Vision: Broadwater County envisions a diverse, accessible, and connected trail system that links communities, parks, recreation areas, and key destinations while supporting public health, safety, education, and economic vitality. This vision guides the development of multimodal, ADA compliant trails that reflect community priorities, integrate existing plans, strengthen local business and tourism, and position trails as essential infrastructure for the county’s long term growth.

Mission: To ignite community energy, partnerships, and resources to bring a connected Broadwater County trail system to life—transforming shared vision and solid planning into funded, built, and beloved trails for all.

Accomplishments:
1. Completed a Trail Vision Plan with over 400 miles of trail routes.
2. Completed and dedicated the Missouri River Paddlers Trail 43
3. Completed maintenance of the Front Street asphalt trail
4. Participated in several events for fundraising and information sharing (Ales for Trails, Pint Night, Townsend 4H and Rodeo, parades, etc.)
5. Walking Audits for improvement and safety of our streets and sidewalks.
6. Fall Birding and Colors Hike at Pond 3 Canyon Ferry Lake.
7. BCT has signed an MOU with FWP for long term maintenance of access sites on the river.
8. Signed an MOU with Lewis and Clark Trail Alliance becoming a Cooperative Affiliate (their first) to help build resilience and education on the national trail across Broadwater County.

Future Activities:
1. Fairgrounds Trail (North Harrison to Fairgrounds) – Grant submission. We need community support. Sign the petition (located at the BCT booth). Why? MDT needs evidence that the project is not just an idea from a single agency, but one that reflects the wishes of the community. A petition provides a verifiable record of public interest, which strengthens the application in the competitive scoring process
2. October 23 Canyon Ferry Taphouse: Ales for Trails
Planning additional events like fun walk/runs, hosted hikes/walks, Celebrating National Trails Day, Winter Trails Day, Migratory Bird Day walks, paddle/bike/run/walk event.
3. Centerville Park: Grant submission for design & survey trail and parking area. Partnership with County Parks & Rec Board and Rotary
4. Feasibility Study for a non-motorized pedestrian bridge across the Missouri River.
5. Canton Park: design & survey a trail and parking area. Partnership with County Parks & Rec Board, Townsend Youth Baseball, Adult Softball and Rod & Gun Club.
6. Reconstruction of the trail north along Hwy 287 from Missouri River Bridge to Silos.

Trails are not just pathways — they are essential community infrastructure that support our physical health, mental well being, and social connection. Inclusive, accessible, and free for all, they reflect the values of a growing Broadwater County. Our long term vision is fueled by the belief that everyone deserves seamless, meaningful access to nature. By building key connections between neighborhoods, schools, parks, and open spaces, we’re ensuring that immersive outdoor experiences are always within reach.
